Too much has been written about horrible bosses and senior colleagues
that make your professional life terrible. But very little has been written
about people who make things work and take the whole team to success. They are
the good bosses who help each and every member of the team. Let us see what the
qualities that make a good boss are.
1.
Strong
leaders – If a team wins or loses, the captain usually gets the blame or
credit. This rule is applied here as well. Good bosses are strong leaders who
will not leave any man behind. They are usually masters of their field who know
how the pieces fit and how the entire team can take up the task.
2.
Are
accountable – Good bosses will hold themselves accountable according to the
same rules that are applied for the rest of the staff. If the team succeeds, they
will not take the credit themselves but will say it’s a team effort. But if the
team fails, they will not just blame the team for it, but will try to find the
cause of failure.
3.
Effective
decision maker – Decision making is an important task in any team’s
success. The manager is the head of the team and it is their job to take decisions
on all matters of the team. Effective decisions help the team gain success
quickly. It is not just taking decision that matters, what really matters is
that taking the right decision and standing by it.
4.
Good
problem solver – Almost all good bosses are good problem solvers. Like I
said earlier, good bosses are masters of their respected field and know where
every pieces of the puzzle fits. When they are hiring for jobs in Pakistan, they will make sure that every team member is also like them.
5.
Manage
corporate hierarchy – Good managers are those who are not just managing
their team, but are also managing the relationship between higher management
and their subordinates. Effective communication between different levels of
management makes it easier to hand over tasks to the employees. They are also
able to meet the expectations of higher management and/or clients. Good communication
between different levels of the corporate hierarchy ensures that help arrives
on time when needed.
6.
Honest –
Honesty is a trait that every good employee should have. If your boss is
honest, consider yourself lucky because he or she will be of great help to you.
7. Dedication
– Good bosses are dedicated to their work. They are not workaholics, but
are able to manage every task so that it gets done before time. A dedicated
employee will make sure that his work takes him to success. But a dedicated
boss will make sure that his entire team is successful.
8.
No micromanagement
– Micromanagement has a negative connotation and is considered close to
being miss-management. Good bosses don’t have this trait in them as they will
not interfere on day-to-day basis.
9.
Put
people first – Being a boss does not mean that the subordinates should be
burdened with tasks that don’t ever complete. Good bosses will always keep a
balance between employees needs and the needs of clients and organization. They
understand that a happy employee is a more productive employee so they will
take care of all employees working for them.
10.
Show
appreciation – Giving an employee a pat on the back and you will see that
their quality of work increasing. Positive feedback from bosses is an excellent
way of motivating employees. The best type of appreciation is monetary, but a
couple of sentences that you recognize their talent and appreciate their
contribution for the company and team will boost morale of your employees.
I might have left some other qualities of good bosses. But
if you find the ones I listed in yourself or your boss, consider all those
working left, right, up and down to be very happy.
